Hey! James Mack here!

Today, I'm going to be showing you how to play, create and personalize your own Super Mario World game, also known as "Rom" or "Rom hack"! The tutorial involves using the .SMC editing software known as "Lunar Magic" developed by FusoyaNiche. Lunar Magic is an easy-to-operate, fun and interactive level editing system.

1) First, you will need to download 5 different files. These are:

  • Lunar Magic: The software required to edit super mario world. Available here:

    http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lm/

  • Super Mario World.smc : Basically, this is the empty, completely unedited file that you will be playing on zsnes and editing yourself on lunar magic. Available here:

    http://www.coolrom.com/roms/snes/7968/Super_Mario_World.php

  • Lunar IPS: This software is only required if you want to play IPS-patched files. This is explained later. Available here:

    http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/

  • Zsnesw: This is the emulator you will be running super mario world, built by nintendo. An "emulator" is any type of software or machinery that can run DVDS, CDS and computer files - Xbox 360s, PS3s and even the original "pong" machine are all emulators. While Zsnesw isn't the only emulator that can run .SMC files, it is, in my opinion, definitely the most manageable. Available here:

    http://www.zsnes.com/

Ok, now you've donwloaded everything, put all the files in a directory you can remember (I.e. your desktop).

Now, double click "Lunar Magic" to run. Once Lunar Magic is open, scroll over to "File" and then "Open" on the dropdown menu, and then locate and open your super mario world.smc file you download from CoolRom.com.

Once opened, the contents of Super Mario World should now be layed out in front of you in an interactive editing tool. If you're feeling brave, you can start editing, but for now, just scroll over to "File", and "Emulator". Here, you will need to locate your emulator, zsnesw. Your Super Mario World game will now run bug free. If by some amazing chance you get the classic "Chcksum: Error" message upon attempting error, then you are trying to open a super mario world file that is damaged; you will need to re-download.

Hope you have fun! Please post any questions you have below Smile

Thanks!
